Clark Street Streetscape Now Underway

Thanks to the coordinating work of the Rogers Park Business Alliance, the Clark Street corridor between Devon and Arthur Avenues is going to have a new look in the very near future. Beginning on July 5th, the Vision Clark Street Corridor Master Plan begins its transformation from a bunch of ideas and pretty drawings to actual construction and tangible results.

According to Sandi Price, Executive Director of RPBA, former Alderpersons Pat O’Connor (40th), Harry Osterman (48th) and Joe Moore (49th) worked to secure $3.8 million in TIF funding to make this project happen. The construction period is estimated to take 18 to 24 months.

Although RPBA has studied the entire length of Clark Street within the Rogers Park community and has made recommendations for improvements up and down the street, no timeframe has been established for the continuation of this work north of Arthur Avenue. RPBA and other community stakeholders would certainly like to see more streetscaping done all the way north to the Evanston border.

Some of the highlights of the current plan include:

  • The closure of Arthur Avenue between Clark Street and Ashland Avenue to create a new public open space, including a mid-block pedestrian crossing on Clark Street.
  • A renovated plaza at Clark and Schreiber Streets in front of the 24th District police station.
  • A landscaped median on Clark Street between Devon and Schreiber.
  • A reconfigured public parking lot at Clark Street and Devon Avenue.
  • New sidewalk, parkway pavers, street trees and cosmetic improvements to neighborhood identifiers.
  • Complete resurfacing of the roadway in the improvement area.
