Around Rogers Park: In Memoriam

We mourn the loss of Auxiliary Corporal Mario Araujo of the Chicago Fire Department. Mr. Araujo died Tuesday, April 7 of complications from COVID-19. Mr. Araujo began working for the Fire Department in 2003. For most of that time, and continuing until his death, Mr. Araujo worked out of Engine Company #102 on the 7300 block of North Clark Street on Truck #25. Mr. Araujo was 49 years old.

According to a news report filed by ABC-7 News, Deputy District Chief Brian McKermitt of CFD’s 2nd District issued the following statement after Mr. Araujo passed away:

“We're devastated by this. A lot of times when we have a loss, we know what we're dealing with or how it's affecting us. This loss is a little different."

RPBG extends its condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Araujo and to all of the hardworking firefighters, other first-responders and healthcare workers who are on the front lines of the fight against the virus who risk their own lives every day to help the rest of us stay safe. Mr. Araujo made the ultimate sacrifice. For that, we are devastated and grateful.
