I am pleased that State Representative Kelly Cassidy (14th District)) has agreed to speak at our Tuesday, July 23rd meeting. (Kelly's district includes Rogers Park, and she is a proud local resident, raising her family here.)
Indisputably, Kelly is a rising star in Illinois politics - leading the way this past session on several key issues. Importantly, she and Governor Pritzker have a solid, mutually respectful relationship and be sure that they consult on many key issues.
After five years of exhaustive work, she and our State Senator Heather Steans took lead roles in passing the new legal cannabis legislation, recently signed into law.
As per an article found in "Governing Magazine, "the new bill "makes Illinois the first state to legalize marijuana sales through the legislative process and the 11th state to allow recreational use of the drug. In contrast to their predecessors in other states, Illinois lawmakers created one of the most far-reaching legalization bills in the country, explicitly seeking to make it easier for people of color to benefit from the booming marijuana industry."
This new law will impact us in the world of multifamily - as we need to implement policies that balance the right to consume (and, in certain instances, grow) in the privacy of one's homes, versus the rights of those who cannot tolerate the smell or who are otherwise opposed. How does it impact policies we implement as employers? How do we treat prospective rental applicants (conditionally approved, as per the County's new Just Housing Ordinance), who have convictions based on use or sale of cannabis?
We may also learn other important state issues, including the new law about emotional support animals (a "win" for our industry), the troubling state budget, and I'm sure we will discuss her stance on rent control, an issue that will clearly rear its head again in Springfield.
Related to the issue of affordable housing, we will hear from Paul Colgan of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago will present on the Affordable Rights Ordinance.
This is an important meeting. Please register at the earliest possible time so we can plan accordingly.
